Toronto's Beach Season Kicks Off this Weekend

May 30, 2014

The majority of Toronto's swimming beaches will open Sunday, June 1, with lifeguards on site. Two other beaches will open June 14 once lifeguards have been trained.

Toronto's swimming beaches are world class. They provide residents and visitors with a place to relax, exercise and cool off throughout the summer.

Swimming beaches opening June 1

• Bluffer’s Beach

• Centre Island Beach

• Cherry Beach

• Gibraltar Point Beach

• Hanlan’s Point Beach

• Kew-Balmy Beach

• Sunnyside Beach

• Ward’s Island Beach

• Woodbine Beaches

Swimming beaches opening June 14

Toronto's beach water quality is tested daily at each of the 11 swimming beaches from June 1 through to Labour Day. The samples are analyzed using the most stringent testing standards in the world. If tests show E. coli levels exceed the provincial standards of 100 E. coli per 100 ml of water, Toronto Public Health will post warning signs against swimming at that beach.

More information about daily water quality testing is available at http://www.toronto.ca/health/swimsafe/index.htm or by calling 416-392-7161.

The City’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division operates and maintains all recreation-related beach facilities and amenities. This service includes regular beach grooming and care of washrooms and changerooms. The Toronto Police Marine Unit provides lifeguard services and takes daily water samples on behalf of Toronto Water and Toronto Public Health.
